Peter Cochrane, the well known and highly influential former Head of BT Research, was appointed Chief Technologist of BT in 1999. In this fascinating role he established a new team, the Communication Consultancy Group which is concerned with charting the long-term future of technology, society, BT and its customers and clients. Peter joined BT Laboratories in 1973 and has held numerous senior positions, among others: Head of the Long Lines Division (1988) and Head of the Systems Research Division at BTL (1991).
In 1993, Peter Cochrane was promoted to head the Research Department at BT Laboratories with 660 staff dedicated to the study of future technologies, systems, networks and services.
A consultant to numerous international companies concerned with systems, networks and test equipment development, he is a sought-after speaker on current trends in technology and the future of digital ways to improve and change our lives.
Peter Cochrane has published widely in all areas of IT and is also a regular contributor to the print and electronic press, radio and TV. Peter is a Fellow of the IEE, the IEEE and the Royal Academy of Engineering, a Member of the New York Academy of Sciences, and a Visiting Professor to University College London and Essex University. He is also a member of the TTI Vanguard Advisory Board and he joined a select group of Apple Masters in 1997.
Peter Cochrane has received international recognition and many awards for his work including awards from; the IEE Electronics Division Premium, the Queen′s Award for Innovation & Export and the IEE Computing and Control Premium and the IERE Benefactors Prize for published papers. He was also awarded the Martlesham Medal for his contribution to the development of fibre optics systems and networks, the Institute of Mining Engineers James Clerk Maxwell Memorial Medal and the IBTE Best Paper Prize.
